Keisha Castle-Hughes, 20, the New Zealand actress who rose to prominence playing Paikea ‘Pai’ Apirana in Whale Rider (2002) was only eleven years old, when the film was produced. Castle-Hughes was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the youngest female nominated in the Best Actress category, and for an award at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards for Best Actress which she won in 2004.
