‘I Still Believe’, the pop-ballad song written by Antonina Armato and Giuseppe Cantarelli and originally recorded by pop singer Brenda K. Starr, was later re-recorded/ performed by Mariah Carey and Hongkong-born Cantopop singer Sandy Lam.

‘I Still Believe’ is a ballad in which the theme is that the writer is confident she will never be together again with her former boyfriend, but she still believes that some day she will be. The ballad is based on the real life love/ relationship of Antonia Armato, whose former boyfriend had proposed to her, but she felt that the time for marriage was not right. Not pleased with her decision, he gave her an ultimatum to get married or break up. But Armato stuck to her decision and the couple broke up, and she deals with her emotional pains in the pop ballad ‘I Still Believe’.

In her version of ‘I Still Believe’ Mariah Carey co-produced her cover song with Stevie J and Mike Mason for her eighth album released as the album's third single in 1998. She re-recorded the song as a tribute to Brenda K. Starr, as Carey had been Starr's back-up singer in the late 1980s and Starr had helped Carey's career by handing over a demo tape to Sony Music Entertainment executive Tommy Mottola who signed Carey's first music recording contract.

‘I Still Believe’ peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It was certified platinum by the RIAA, and was ranked 36 on the Hot 100 year-end charts for 1999. Outside USA it settled in the middle of the charts, such as the United Kingdom where it reached the top twenty and it entered the Canadian top ten.

The single's music video was inspired by Marilyn Monroe's visit to entertain American troops in Korea in a United Service Organizations show in 1954. The video shows Mariah Carey copying Monroe's make-up and hairstyle and Judy Garland's performance gestures, visiting the Edwards Air Force Base in California in December 1998 and singing for airmen and soldiers as Monroe had done during the Korean War. Watch the design of Carey’s gown and compare it with the gown Monroe was wearing in Korea, and compare her Monroe-look hairstyle too in her photos here.
