Actress Keisha Castle-Hughes in Whale Rider

Keisha Castle-Hughes, 20, the New Zealand actress who rose to prominence playing Paikea ‘Pai’ Apirana in Whale Rider (2002) was only eleven years old, when the film was produced. Castle-Hughes was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the youngest female nominated in the Best Actress category, and for an award at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards for Best Actress which she won in 2004.

Mo'Nique is an American actress, comedienne, and talk show host, who rose to fame in the UPN series The Parkers while also making a name for herself as a stand-up comedian hosting a variety of venues including Showtime at the Apollo. She performed roles in such films as Phat Girlz, and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins. In 2009, she received critical acclaim for her role in the film Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire. She has won numerous awards including a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Precious. She has become the 16th African American actress to receive the Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She hosts The Mo'Nique Show, a late night talk show that premiered in 2009 on BET.

Actress Anna Kendrick

The 24-year-old American film and stage actress Anna Kendrick is an best known for the roles of Natalie Keener in the 2009 film Up in the Air, and Jessica Stanley in the Twilight Saga film series. She is also known for her other work in the films Camp and Rocket Science and the Broadway musical High Society. Kendrick was nominated for Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart

American stage and screen actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, nominated for Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Jean Craddock in the 2009 musical-drama Crazy Heart, has appeared in memorable roles in films such as Donnie Darko (2001), Secretary (2002), Sherrybaby (2006), Trust the Man (2006), World Trade Center (2006) and The Dark Knight (2008). In Crazy Heart, written and directed by Scott Cooper and based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Thomas Cobb, Jeff Bridges plays Bad Blake, a down-and-out country music singer/songwriter who tries to turn his life around after beginning a relationship with a young journalist Jean portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jeff Bridges' performance has also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The film was produced for $7 million by Country Music Television and opened in limited release in the U.S. on December 16, 2009.

Vera Farmiga and George Clooney in Up in the Air

American actress Vera Farmiga, 36, best known for her roles in the films Running Scared, The Departed, and Orphan, was nominated for a Golden Globe, Screen Actor's Guild Award, a BAFTA and Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in the film ‘Up in the Air’.

The daughter of Ukrainian immigrants Mykhailo, a computer-systems analyst, and Luba Farmiga, a schoolteacher, Farmiga was raised in an insular Ukrainian American community. She attended a Ukrainian Catholic school in Newark and toured with a Ukrainian folk-dancing ensemble.

Farmiga attended Syracuse University's School of Visual and Performing Arts. She was active in theater and television. She appeared in several high profile films in the early 2000s. She stars opposite George Clooney, Anna Kendrick, and Melanie Lynskey in the 2009 comedy-drama ‘Up in the Air’ for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Performance by an Actress, as well as many other nominations.

Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, 35, who starred in several American films such as Blow, Vanilla Sky, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Nine, and best known for her work with acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar in Broken Embraces, Volver and All About My Mother, is nominated for her third Academy Award in 2010 for her role as Carla Albanese in the film version of the musical ‘Nine’. Cruz had already received her Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Academy Award for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona during the 81st Annual Academy Awards held at Kodak Theatre on February 22, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.

So far Cruz has won many prestigious awards such as three Goyas, two European Film Awards, and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2009, she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, a Goya, and a BAFTA for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She is Spain's first female Oscar winner. Cruz is the sixth Hispanic person to win an Oscar after José Ferrer, Rita Moreno, Benicio del Toro (Puerto Rico), Anthony Quinn (Mexico), and Javier Bardem (Spain). Her 2010 Oscar nomination is only the third time in the history of the Oscars where the winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress was nominated for Best Supporting Actress again in the following year, the other actresses being Estelle Parsons (1967 and 1968) and Lee Grant (1975 and 1976).

On this year’s nomination Penelope was quoted by a website, “I had a new phone line installed, so almost no one had the new number of my house. Only my agent had it and she was in Australia. So they had to get hold of her first and I found out an hour later… I had 19 missed calls and 120 emails and text messages. So for two hours, I was returning calls.”

Cruz, a vegetarian since 2000, speaks four languages: Spanish, Italian, French and English. She has a younger brother Eduardo who is a singer and a younger sister Mónica. She was raised as a Catholic but she is closest to Buddhism. After shooting for ‘Vanilla Sky’ with Tom Cruise, they had a three-year relationship till January 2004. In that period, she and Cruise were seen visiting Church of Scientology locations in Hollywood, and it was speculated that Cruise had convinced Cruz to join Scientology.

After filming Sahara in February 2005 Cruz began dating actor Matthew McConaughey, and in May 2006, they released a joint statement to People that they ‘have decided to take time off as a couple.’ In late 2006, they announced that they were ‘no longer intimate and separating was the best thing to do at this time’. Following that Cruz has been dating actor Javier Bardem since 2007.

The film has won numerous awards, including a Golden Globe Award and Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Award. The film received Academy Award nominations at the 82nd Academy Awards: for Best Picture, Best Actress (Sidibe), Best Supporting Actress (Mo'Nique), Best Director (Daniels), Best Adapted Screenplay (Fletcher), and Best Film Editing (Klotz).

Julie & Julia, the comedy-drama film written and directed by Nora Ephron, depicts events in the life of chef Julia Child (played by Meryl Streep) in the early years in her culinary career, contrasting her life with Julie Powell (Amy Adams), who aspires to cook all 524 recipes from Child's cookbook during a single year, a challenge she described on her popular blog that would make her a published author. Made on a budget of $40 million, the movie has already crossed gross revenue of over $119 million.
